Insider & Curiosities of Fürth
This tour of the Old Town does not focus on the history of Fürth, but rather on amusing anecdotes, whether true or not quite true, that remains to be seen. One story is about the unequal sisters Nuremberg and Fürth, whose friction, disputes, and battles began as soon as they were founded. Even today, the two cities are still at war with each other, albeit only verbally, as fans of the two soccer teams. On the other hand, the Old Town is full of stories about Fürth originals such as Doris Kraus, better known as the Pfeiffndurla.
And they do like each other after all! At least, that is one of many insights gleaned from the countless anecdotes about Fürth, a significant proportion of which point to a deep love for its sister city. A little malicious schadenfreude is certainly no sin when the mishap is on a lighthearted level. Nuremberg dance couples have been known to fall into a manure pit. Sleeping churchgoers were more or less gently roused from their slumber with a stick. One pastor called the people of Fürth a “loose rabble” and blamed their bad morals for the lightning strike on Palm Sunday 1705. In 1792, as the Prussians approached, the sisterly solidarity flared up again, and the most important parish documents were quickly taken to the supposedly safe city of Nuremberg—well, it works after all!
