Every autumn, the city center is transformed for around two weeks as the Michaelis-Kirchweih Fair—the so called “queen of Franconian fairs”—takes over. From Fürther Freiheit to Königsplatz, market stalls, food vendors, and fair rides draw visitors from near and far. It’s not just locals who spend their lunch breaks or evenings at the festival during this time.
The Michaelis-Kirchweih Fair is the largest street fair in southern Germany and one of the oldest and largest in Franconia. Its unique blend of traditional market and lively folk festival attracts around 1.5 million visitors each year. Few other fairs in the region offer such a relaxed atmosphere. A special highlight is the large harvest festival parade, which winds its way through Fürth’s city center every year. Festive floats, marching bands, clubs, and, of course, the harvest queen delight thousands of spectators along the route—including many visitors from neighboring Nuremberg. Those who can’t be there in person are in luck: the parade is broadcast annually on Bavarian television.
In 2018, the Michaelis-Kirchweih Fair has been officially recognized as intangible cultural heritage and looks back on more than 900 years of living tradition—yet it retains a sense of modesty befitting its royal title.
