Jewish life - once and today

Once and today

After the expulsion of Jews from the imperial cities at the end of the Middle Ages, Fürth became the religious center of Jewish life in southern Germany. Power struggles favored the legal situation of Jews in Fürth. In the 18th century, there were several synagogues, prayer rooms, religious learning centers, and a separate hospital. Fürth was one of the European centers of Hebrew book printing. An outstanding testimony to Jewish life in Fürth is the Old Jewish Cemetery, which will be visited briefly at the beginning of the guided city tour.

The former Jewish orphanage is a place of great sorrow and hope at the same time. In 1942, 33 Jewish orphans and the orphanage management were deported from here and are now missing. Shortly after the war, Jewish services were held again in the orphanage's synagogue and a new community was founded. Destruction and hatred could not extinguish faith and confidence. That impresses me deeply.
