Every autumn, the city center is transformed into a state of exception for around two weeks: this is when the Michaelis-Kirchweih Fair begins – the “queen of Franconian fairs.” From Fürther Freiheit to Königsplatz, market stalls, food stands, and fairground rides attract visitors. It's not just the residents of Fürth who spend their lunch breaks or evenings at the festival during this time.
The Michaelis-Kirchweih Fair is the largest street fair in southern Germany and also one of the oldest and largest fairs in Franconia. Its unique blend of traditional market and cheerful folk festival attracts around 1.5 million visitors every year. Hardly any other fair in the region exudes such a relaxed atmosphere. A special highlight is the large harvest festival parade, which winds its way through the entire city center of Fürth every year. Festive floats, music groups, clubs, and, of course, the harvest queen delight thousands of spectators along the route—including many guests from neighboring Nuremberg. Those who can't be there in person are in luck: the parade is broadcast annually on Bavarian television.
Since 2018, the Michaelis-Kirchweih Fair has been officially recognized as intangible cultural heritage – and looks back on over 900 years of living tradition. However, this is hardly noticeable: in keeping with a truly royal modesty.
From 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. (last orders at 10:45 p.m.)
