Fürth Christmas stories

At the end of the 19th century, two watchmen were on duty in the Town Hall Tower, whose job it was to report any fires. They sat in a small room above the bell chamber and could see the whole town. Everyone knew these gentlemen because during the Christmas season, a Christmas tree lit up the tower room above the roofs of Fürth. Stories like these, as well as Franconian Christmas customs, are told by the city guides on this walk through the lovingly decorated Old Town.

Why we decorate Christmas trees at Christmas and where Pelzmärtl comes from are just two of the many stories I will tell you on our Christmas walk. Perhaps you would also like to know how the Zwetschgenmännla and the Rauschgoldengel came into being? And did you know that Christmas celebrations used to be forbidden?
