At the end of the 19th century, two guards were on duty in the town hall bell tower, whose job it was to report when there was a fire somewhere. They sat in the chamber above the bell room and had a view of the whole town. The gentlemen were well-known to everyone because at Christmas time they had a fir tree lit up in the tower room above the skyline of Fürth.
