The Alte Veste is a lookout tower surrounded by ruins.
It was originally built between 1228 and 1235 as a motte-and-bailey castle on the Rosenberg near Zirndorf. At that time, the Rosenberg was even less wooded than it is today, which allowed 'Burg Berch'—named after the Berg family who had it built—to stand proudly on the hill.
The current lookout tower, built to replace two earlier towers destroyed during the Thirty Years' War and World War II, was officially opened on 17 September 1980. Since then, the Alte Veste and the inn at the foot of the tower have become a popular destination for excursions in the Fürth area. Visitors can climb the 162 steps to the viewing platform, 28 metres above the ground, free of charge. From there, you can enjoy a marvellous view over Fürth, Nuremberg, Zirndorf, and the district of Fürth, reaching as far as Franconian Switzerland on a clear day.
The Alte Veste is easily accessible by public transport. You can take the regional train and get off at the 'Alte Veste' stop, or take the bus to the 'Kreutleinstraße' stop. For detailed connection information, visit: www.vgn.de/verbindungen/"
